One clear Montana day last winter while dropping out children off at their respective ski schools, I thought of a great way for the different groups of kids within a ski school to become more recognizable making it easier for the instructor to keep their kids together and easier for the kids (especially the very little ones) to know which instructor was theirs. The one thing that I thought would be most easy to change and most recognizable would be the look of everyone’s helmets within those specific groups.
Upon doing research and looking spending hours on the internet looking for decorative helmet covers for my own kids, I realized that there was no other company in the US making solid colored, sleek helmet covers for ski and snowboard helmets for the addition of resort branding, competitive sponsorship logos, or simply for group recognition.
From there my husband and I started to brainstorm the possibilities, and ultimately came up with the concept that if there were fashionable options for helmet wearers to keep their helmets looking fresh, new, and hip, more people would make that headstrong choice to be more safe while enjoying their sports and wear their helmets. How great would it be to have covers that look unique, are sleek, easily interchangeable with whatever you are wearing, and breathable keeping the helmet comfortable.
The next journey our idea took involved me and my sewing machine and a couple of yards of spandex. Within a day I had designed my first Hip Headz prototype (rough as it was) and showed it to my husband. We both went crazy with ideas from there.
What struck us so hard was that the covers themselves didn’t just fit our ski helmets; they also fit the kid’s helmets, our bike helmets, our neighbors skateboard helmets, rock climbing and kayaking helmets, and even construction helmets. Others have tried them on their equestrian helmets. We saw the versatility in the design that makes them transitional from sport to sport as well as from gear to gear making the hats themselves non-seasonal items which is unlike any other helmet covers on the market to date.
Since then, we chose a manufacturer in Colorado, and received our first real product samples in all of our chosen fabrics in time for the November 2007 Montana Snow Expo in Bozeman, MT. The Expo was to be our first real chance to see the consumer response and it was overwhelmingly positive which just reiterated to us that this is a new product with clout. It is a first of its kind, and we are so proud to offer it to the public prior to the 2007 Christmas season.
Who knows where a little idea can take us, but one thing is for sure… We are a country of opportunities, where great ideas can take root, and little ideas can make a difference.
For this reason we are proud to be made in the USA and hope our line of helmet hats encourages a full spectrum of generations to make the headstrong choice to be more safe while sporting and have more fun while being safe.
